As a nail technician I have picked up some really useful yet very simple tips on how you can achieve salon standard nails from the comfort of your own home. I have put together a list of my top tips to get the most from painting and caring for your nails at home.
Always apply a base coat first when painting your nails. A base coat will prevent nail varnish from staining the nail and help prolong the length of time you get from your nail varnish. The trick is to apply as thin a layer as possible and allow a couple of minutes to dry before applying the colour.
When filing your nails don’t saw back and forth as this can cause the nail to break. Be light handed and try to go ‘side to centre’.
Invest in a cuticle pusher or orange wood stick. Push back your cuticle gently before painting your nails and gently scrape away any remaining cuticle which may be resting on top of the nail plate. The cuticle is made up of oils which can cause your nail varnish to lift and chip if not removed from the nail plate.
Next up, apply 2-3 really thin layers of colour. Your true colour will usually appear after the second coat. The thinner the coat of nail varnish the better as this will help prevent bubbling and lifting of the varnish. Allow a couple of minutes in between to allow the polish to dry.
A really good top coat will add super shine, strength and help seal in your finished look.
Lastly a cuticle oil will help strengthen, nourish and encourage the nail to grow. You don’t need to spend a fortune on a cuticle oil and can pick them up in your local chemist.
I hope all you fellow nail lovers enjoyed this short and sweet post! Let me know your tips and tricks.
