There is nothing more beautiful than our pale Irish skin but I for one also love a golden glow and enjoy experimenting with tanning. Fake tan is also a much safer alternative to the natural suns rays which can be harmful to the skin over time and the best part… It’s instant!
I find that the general consensus in Ireland is that a lot of people are genuinely afraid of tanning. Be it the fear of looking like an oompa loompa, a striped tiger or reeking at your desk the next day. But fear not, I have some simple tips and advice to help eleviate the tanning terrors.
My tan of choice is Cocoa Brown Tan by the lovely Marissa Carter. On a whim, I picked up a bottle in Penny’s months ago and I haven’t used another tan since. I am a massive fan of the one hour tanning mousse. It is so easy to apply, comes in two shades and also there is an array of products which you can use in conjunction with your tan. It doesn’t have a stinky tan smell, in fact I really enjoy the fresh Tahitian Gardenia scent. It appears instantly on the skin and you can wash it off after one hour for a light glow, two hours for a medium tan and more than three hours for a darker tan. It is also so affordable and delivers amazing results! It has no parabens and is kind to sensitive skin and can also be applied to the face. I apply the dark shade mixed with a little bit of the chocolate whip moisturiser which gives me the perfect tan. Once rinsed the tan can last between 5-7 days. I have definitely joined the Cocoa Brown Tanning Thursday cult!
So here’s a few things to keep in mind before and after you tan:
Preparing for tan:
As with a lot of things in life, preparation is key. Our skin is built up of millions of skin cells which naturally shed every day. But, the use of an exfoliator before a tan can do wonders. Exfoliators help buff away any dead skin cells and leave your skin feeling revived, supple and ready for some bronzing! Use an exfoliator the day before you tan. Cocoa Brown’s tough stuff 3 in 1 body scrub is great for prepping the skin and removing stubborn tan. It is quite strong so it is best to use this on the tougher area such as elbows, feet and knees. I can be used 2-4 times a week.
Before you tan, don’t apply any perfumes, deodorants, lotions or potions as this can alter the development of the tan colour. Apply a clear or colour nail varnish to avoid staining the nail plate.
Which tan should I use?
It can be intimidating trying to find a tanning brand that works for your skin. If you are somewhat of a tanning virgin always try a lighter shade first and if you feel brave, maybe then try out something darker. A gradual tanning lotion may also be an option to explore for tanning virgins. By using gradual tanning lotions, you can gauge how you feel about having a tan and you can build up a desired effect over a few days. Cocoa Brown also offer a gradual tanning moisturiser called Gentle Bronze.
Pro longing tan:
Moisturising the skin daily can help improve the condition of the skin ensuring an even fade and help to avoid a build up of tan in extra dry areas such as elbows and knees. An oil free moisturiser is best to use with fake tan to help ensure an even fade.
